Malmesbury welcomes visitors from twin town of Gien, France

On Saturday 19th July 2025, Malmesbury Town Council and the Mayor, Councillor Stephen James welcomed visitors from our twin town of Gien in France.

This was a special visit due to it being 25 years of the official Twinning between Malmesbury and Gien.  Former Mayor and Councillor, Mr Jim Toogood signed the original agreement in the year 2000.

In attendance was Julia Bowen, Chair of Malmesbury & District Twinning Association, members of Twinning, Reverend Oliver Ross, Graeme Brown the Warden of Warden & Freeman, former Mayor and Councillor Mrs Catherine Doody, Rosa Clough Mayoral Cadet and Malmesbury Town Councillors.

Julia Bowen presented a lino picture of Malmesbury, created by local artist Phillip Kingsbury to our friends of Gien.

MALMESBURY is a vibrant, market town, steeped in history going back to medieval times. Currently home to many famous & popular musical, cultural, and festival events throughout the year, visitors can browse the charming streets with independent retailers, or stop at one of the lively cafes, restaurants, pubs, and bars.

Attractions to visit include the stunning 12th century Malmesbury Abbey, 15th century Market Cross and the Athelstan Museum with a painting of Malmesbury Abbey by JMW Turner. There are also lovely walks along the River Avon.
