The easing of lockdown meant Malmesbury's Young Citizen of the Year, George Davies could finally be presented with the John Poole trophy.
The presentation took place in George's back garden in Malmesbury, where small groups can now gather providing they obey social distancing rules.
George was joined by Town Mayor Cllr Campbell Ritchie and Mayoress Ruth Ritchie, former Mayor Sue Poole, widow of John Poole, and Cllr Gavin Grant, who nominated George and chairs local charity HEALS of Malmesbury.
The John Poole cup for the Young Citizen of the Year is presented in his memory. George is exactly the sort of caring and generous person the award was designed for.
Presenting the cup to George, Mrs Poole said "It is so good to be able to present John's cup, at last. John was a former Mayor of Malmesbury and believed in recognising the work of our young people. George is exactly the caring and generous young person he had in mind. He’s a most worthy winner".
Commenting on the award presentation, Cllr Campbell Ritchie said "We had a great virtual awards night with more than 100 residents joining online. But it is good to be able to congratulate the winners in person and see their awards presented."
In addition to the John Poole cup, the Malmesbury Young Citizen of the Year also receives £100 from the South Cotswolds Rotary Club.
In nominating George for the award, Cllr Grant said "George does so much free of charge to help local charities and events. When he won a national company award from Places Leisure, instead of using the money to enjoy himself, he gave it to HEALS. Now he is doing the same with his award from Rotary. It is so generous and at a time when people need help."
Commenting on his award and decision to donate his winnings George said "I was delighted to be nominated and did not expect to win, but am very pleased I did. So many people need help at this time and I know HEALS does great work locally. So I decided that's where my award should go."
HEALS of Malmesbury (Help, Empowerment and Local Support) is a small charity based at Malmesbury Town Hall, which supports people who need advice, help and support such as food provision through local Foodbanks, debt repayment and money management advice and practical support on applying for benefits. It also organises a summer and Christmas activity programme for young people, families and isolated older people in the town and surrounding villages.
